A pipe rises through the roof and carries the overhead electrical connection. It may look like one more flashing detail on the estimate, but the roofer, electrical contractor and serving utility need an agreed sequence before work reaches the mast. Do not leave the question until shingles have been stripped around it.
The utility example below is BC Hydro. Elsewhere, use the utility serving the property and the local electrical authority; its connection rules and safety arrangements may differ. A dimension from a BC drawing is not a clearance instruction for an Ontario house.
At the quote visit, the owner calls it the pipe with the wires. That is enough to start the coordination. Mike puts it on the scope as a separate item instead of letting it disappear among the ordinary vents. The household does not need to learn electrical terminology to make sure the right people are involved.
Identify the Equipment Without Approaching It
Tell the roofer about the overhead service when requesting the quote. Ground-level photographs can help the professionals plan, provided you remain safely away from wires and damaged equipment. Do not climb up to read a fitting, move a cable or check whether a cover feels loose.
BC Hydro's overhead-system guidance warns that weatherproof covering on service wires does not make them safe to touch. It also describes contacting the utility about arrangements for work near its equipment, including temporary disconnection in suitable cases.
Switching off the house's main breaker does not make the incoming service safe for roofing work. Have the professionals establish the necessary safety measures with the utility. If equipment is damaged, sparking or down, keep clear and contact emergency services and the utility rather than proceeding with the roof appointment.
Coordinate the Mast Before Opening the Roof
Use the property's serving utility and applicable electrical authority.
Identify the utility
Use the property's serving utility and applicable electrical authority.
Assess equipment
Electrical professionals establish condition and safe work arrangements.
Coordinate opening
Book service work, roofing and any required inspection together.
Close and record
Restore weather protection and retain both trades' completion records.
Separate Three Responsibilities on the Quote
The utility controls its service work and any required connection arrangements. The electrical contractor assesses electrical equipment and handles its authorised work. The roofer restores the roof's water-shedding detail. Exact ownership boundaries and responsibilities need confirmation for the property.
Ask who books the utility, who obtains required electrical permissions or inspections, and who confirms the roof can be opened. A line reading electrical work by others needs an actual contractor and a date.
BC Hydro's connection information is the starting route for its customers. Tell it whether the work is ordinary roofing around existing equipment or also involves changing the mast or service. Those are different requests, and the second can affect more than the roof schedule.
The roofer's proposed date and the electrical contractor's availability do not match. Rather than strip that area and hope, the team changes the sequence. Dave's contribution is practical: "Who is responsible for keeping this opening dry between visits?" Someone's name needs to go beside the answer.
A Flashing Repair Can Reveal a Support Problem
Suppose the old roof flashing is split but the mast appears stable. The electrical assessment may allow a coordinated roof-detail replacement without changing the service. Now suppose the mast has moved and its support is questionable. Sealing around the new position would not resolve why it moved.
The work plan should identify who assesses support and equipment condition before the new roofing conceals the area. Do not attach temporary ropes, scaffolding or roofing equipment to the mast. It is not a convenient roof anchor.
Ask the roofer to name the compatible flashing arrangement and how it will be installed within the authorised electrical sequence. A generic plumbing vent boot is not automatically suitable for the mast's dimensions, movement or service configuration.
The owner mentions a piece of essential powered equipment while discussing the outage. That changes the household plan even though it changes none of the shingles. A useful pre-start conversation gives people time to organise around the work instead of discovering its consequences that morning.
Plan the Gap Between Visits
The household needs the expected interruption, access arrangements and a contingency if a utility visit or inspection is delayed. Identify essential equipment affected by a power interruption and discuss its needs with the appropriate provider beforehand.
The building also needs weather protection. Agree on how the opening will remain protected if the electrical and roofing portions cannot finish together. That responsibility should not fall into the gap between two invoices.
Keep the service-work records and professional photographs of the finished roof detail. For later leaks, give the investigator the dates and scope of both trades' work. The roofing photo guide helps specify useful records; the quote guide helps ensure the shared detail was included in the first place.
